形态描述：树干圆柱形，高达3米。羽状叶长1.2-1.5米，叶轴横切面圆形或三角状圆形,柄长15-30厘米，两侧有疏刺，刺略向下弯，长约2毫米，羽状裂片80-120对，条形或披针状条形，厚革质，坚硬，直或微弯，边缘稍反曲，上部微渐窄，先端渐尖，基部窄，两侧不对称，下延生长，上面深绿色，中脉隆起，脉的中央常有一条凹槽，下面绿色，有散生短柔毛或渐变无毛，中脉显著隆起，中部的羽状裂片长15-20厘米，宽6-8毫米。雄球花长圆锥状圆柱形，长约40厘米，径10-15厘米，有短梗，小孢子叶楔形，长3.5-4.5厘米，顶部三角状或斜方形，先端具钻形长尖头，宽1.2-2厘米，密生褐黄色绒毛，花药3-5 (多为4)个聚生; 大孢子叶密被褐黄色绒毛，上部的顶片斜方状宽圆形或宽圆形，宽较长为大或长宽几相等，宽6-8厘米，边缘有30余枚钻形裂片，裂片长3-3.5厘米，先端尖，通常无毛，顶生的裂片较长大，长4-5厘米，边缘常疏生锯齿或再分裂，大孢子叶的下部急缩成粗短的柄状，长3-7厘米，上部两侧生胚珠2-4枚，胚珠无毛，卵圆形或近圆球形，顶端有一乳头状突起点。种子卵圆形或椭圆状倒卵圆形，长4.5-5厘米，径4-4.7厘米，熟时暗红褐色，具光泽，干后外种, 皮常同中种皮分离开。
